Just about everyone has some level of apprehension when it comes to seeing the dentist, but for some, the fear can be so great that it prevents them from getting the care they need. Luckily, modern dentistry has some techniques to assist you if you suffer from intense dental anxiety. Read on to learn about sedation dentistry, whether you qualify, and what you can expect from this treatment.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is the practice of administering different medications to a patient before beginning a procedure. The goal is to calm the patient and alleviate their fears.
Two common methods of sedation include nitrous oxide sedation and intravenous (IV) sedation.
Effects of Nitrous Oxide Sedation
You may know nitrous oxide by its more common name, “laughing gas.” It is a blend of nitrogen and oxygen that produces a light, euphoric feeling in patients, reducing both reaction time and pain sensitivity.
The medicine is given through a mask that fits over your nose and can be increased or decreased to your ideal comfort level throughout your appointment. While you will remain conscious and alert, you’ll also feel deeply relaxed and free of fear. Nitrous oxide also wears off quickly, usually after just a couple of minutes of breathing regular oxygen, allowing the patient to go on about their day afterward as normal.
Effects of IV Sedation
With this technique, the dentist will insert an IV line into an arm vein to sedate the patient, usually with a more powerful sedative like benzodiazepine. This provides an even deeper state of relaxation than nitrous oxide, and patients will often have difficulty staying awake.
Because of the intravenous administration, IV sedation tends to kick in quickly. It also allows the dentist the freedom to adjust the medicine accordingly during the procedure to keep the patient calm. Unlike nitrous oxide, however, the effects don’t wear off so quickly. Plan to have someone escort you home from the dentist’s office.
How Do I Know if I’m a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
Nitrous oxide dentistry may be suitable for you if you fit the following descriptions:
- You’re anxious about visiting the dentist.
- You’re uncomfortable with needles.
- A strong gag reflex prohibits you from getting dental work done.
- You have trouble sitting still.
- You’re undergoing a relatively short, simple procedure.
On the other hand, IV sedation may be a better fit if any of the following apply to you:
- You have several dental phobia.
- You need extended care or multiple procedures.
- You have an overactive gag reflex.
- You have a high tolerance to numbing agents like local anesthetics.
Ultimately, you should consult your dentist before your appointment to see if and which sedation dentistry may be right for you.
Hopefully, being aware of these methods and how they’ll affect you will ease your concerns as you prepare for your next appointment.
